Getting a job can be an incredibly stressful experience. No matter whether you’re currently searching for one, or you’re on the cusp of starting at a newly acquired one, it can be quite stressful.
There are quite a few movies out there that directly reflect this formative experience, many of which can be quite cathartic to watch if you’re currently on the hunt for a job, or even if you’ve already found yourself one!
But what are some of the best movies about getting a job? Well, read on below, and you just may find out!
The Intern (2015)
This film will have you feeling motivated to take on just about any job you put your mind to.
The plot of the film concerns Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower played by Robert De Niro who decides to take up a position as an intern for a hugely popular fashion website after deciding that retirement is boring.
During his time at the job, working under Jules Ostin, played by Anne Hathaway, he learns a lot not only about a job he otherwise had no knowledge of, but also provides some amazing wisdom to his new boss.
This is a truly hilarious film that is also incredibly uplifting. It will remind you that it’s never too late to make big strides in your career and that you are capable of tackling any job you put your mind to.
Julie & Julia (2009)
This film has a truly interesting double narrative that follows the two titular characters Julie and Julia as they navigate the culinary world in their own unique ways.
Julie Powell, played wonderfully by Amy Adams, after becoming disillusioned with her nine-to-five call center job endeavors to cook every single recipe in Julia Child’s Mastering The Art Of Cooking book.
As she goes through each of the recipes she blogs about her experiences, and what she learns about herself in the process.
In the second narrative that plays out, we follow the story of Julia Child, who is played by Meryl Streep.
This narrative, which is woven beautifully with that of Julie Powell’s, takes place in Julia’s early career when she was learning the ropes of cooking before she found great success.
Watching both characters explore their love of cooking is very motivating, and watching the early days of Julia Childs reminds us that everyone has to start somewhere.
The film will also remind you of the importance of following your passions, and letting your passions guide your career choices!
Erin Brockovich (2000)
Julie Roberts delivers a career-defining and oscar-winning performance in this truly incredible film.
This is easily one of the most inspiring films on this list. The story follows the titular Erin Brockovich, an unemployed single mother dealing with the challenges of raising children while trying to actively seek out a job.
As a result of her intensive job search, Erin ends up finding herself taking up a position as a legal assistant.
Erin is a truly persistent and inspiring character who, after having trouble claiming compensation for an accident, decides not to give up and pursues her law career.
As a result of her law career and her tenacity, Erin actually manages to nearly single-handedly bring down one of California’s biggest power companies, after discovering that they had been polluting the local water supply with Chromium, damaging the health of local residents.
This film will inspire you to seek out the things that are important to you and to never give up, not only on your dreams but also on your morals.
We have no trouble recommending this film. It is truly brilliant and very inspiring.
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Megastar Tom Cruise truly made a name for himself as an actor with this incredible film.
The story follows the title character of Jerry Maguire who starts the film off as an immensely successful sports agent with plenty of money, massive career prospects, and a beautiful fiance.
The only problem is, that none of this seems to make him happy, and he has some pretty sizable misgivings about his position and what it requires of him.
When he makes his feelings known to his higher-ups, he very quickly becomes the laughing stock of his peers, and is cast out from his lofty position, and back to square one, with his reputation in tatters.
After meeting Dorothy Boyd, played by the awesome Renee Zellweger, he decides to build himself up again from the beginning, which gives him a new life as he sets up a career as an independent sports agent.
This film is incredibly uplifting, and one of the easiest recommendations we can make. It’s also very enjoyable, so makes for a great film to relax and enjoy after a long day!
Legally Blonde (2001)
What starts off as a riotously funny film about vanity and excess soon becomes an incredibly uplifting dream about not allowing yourself to be categorized and the importance of aiming for bigger things.
The film follows Elle Woods who is played by Reese Witherspoon in arguably one of her most popular roles ever. The film is kicked into action when Elle is dumped by her boyfriend as he heads off to attend law school.
In an attempt to win back his affections, Elle follows him to the law school, surprising herself when she is accepted into the prestigious program.
Many hilarious antics ensue as Elle experiences the world of high academia.
Students turn up their noses at the supposedly airheaded Elle, but as she soon discovers that she has a knack for studying law and that she is more intelligent than she gave herself credit for, her goal soon changes from pursuing her ex to becoming a full-fledged lawyer.
In the process, she not only finds herself tangled up in defending a prestigious case but also learns a great deal about herself and her life goals.
This is the perfect film to watch if you want something fun to watch, but also if you want something that will inspire you to find the perfect job for yourself.
