Euphoria is a 2019 American drama series, created by Sam Levinson.

The show is currently one of the most popular productions of the past decade, and is currently rated as the second most watched HBO series of all time, behind Game of Thrones.

This series is responsible for the break-outs of many of the main cast’s careers, including Sydney Sweeney, Barbie Ferreira, and Hunter Schafer.

It also stars several already well-established actors and actresses, including Eric Dane and Zendaya.

Since the pilot was initially aired in 2019, the show has grown significantly, gaining a loyal fan base and countless viewers around the world.

It currently has two seasons, with the show having been renewed for its third season in February 2022. The release date of the third season has not been released yet.

In this article, we will be looking at where the filming of Euphoria took place, including each location used on set, as well as any notable locations that are featured in the show.

Where Was Euphoria Filmed

Where Is Euphoria Based?

The show is based in a fictitious town called East Highland, which is in California.

It is not certain where East Highland would be located in California, and not much has been confirmed about the town aside from its name, and that it is a ‘middle-class suburb’, as the main character Rue (Zendaya) describes it.

However, there have been some rumors surrounding the city, such as that it could be based on Echo Park or Silver Lake, both of which are Los Angeles neighborhoods.

The Filming Locations Of Euphoria

Seeing as the show is set in a fictional location, the filming took place in several locations.

The majority of the scenes were filmed in California – mainly Los Angeles and San Bernardino – and a lot of the series was filmed at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City.

Below, we have listed the locations in which various significant scenes from Euphoria were filmed.

Ulysses S. Grant High School

Since the majority of the main characters in Euphoria are high school students, it makes sense that a lot of the scenes were filmed at a school.

The school in Euphoria is called East Highland High School, which was created for the purpose of the show.

The school scenes, including the scenes in which the characters are in class, in the cafeteria, or simply hanging out at their lockers, were filmed at Ulysses S. Grant High School.

This public school is located in east central San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, in the Valley Glen neighborhood.

Alta Dena Dairy Store

Fezco (Angus Cloud) and Ashtray (Javon Walton) deal drugs under the guise of running a convenience store. This is a location that is used frequently throughout the show.

These scenes were filmed at a dairy store called Alta Dena Dairy Store. This store can be located at 9201 Las Tunas Drive, Temple City, in Orange County, CA.

Del Amo Fashion Center

Many scenes were shot in a mall, when the characters meet up to hang out there.

An example of one of these scenes include when Kat discovered her confidence, walking through the mall wearing her new outfit with Billie Eilish’s ‘You Should See Me in a Crown’ playing in the background.

The scenes filmed at the shopping mall were taken at Del Amo Fashion Center, a three-level shopping center located in Torrance, Los Angeles.

This mall has also been used in movies such as Bad Santa 2, Why Me?, and Jackie Brown.

Bowlium Lanes

In season 2, a couple of scenes take place at a bowling alley. These scenes include Kat (Barbie Ferreira), Ethan (Austin Abrams), Maddy (Alexa Demie), and Jules (Hunter Schafer) hanging out at the alley.

These scenes were filmed at Bowlium Lanes, a bowling alley sited at 4666 Holt Blvd, Monclair, Los Angeles.

The Travel Inn

The motel played a significant role in the first season of Euphoria, being used as a meeting place for several characters.

This includes the encounters of Jules and Cal Jacobs (Eric Dane), and Maddy and Nate (Jacob Elordi) following Nate’s arrest.

The motel used for filming these scenes was the Travel Inn at 8525 Sepulveda Boulevard, located in North Hills, Los Angeles.

Moonlight Rollerway

In the fifth episode of the first season, Rue, Jules, and Lexi (Maude Apatow) spend the evening at a roller skating rink.

These scenes were filmed at the real life roller skating rink, Moonlight Rollerway, located at 5110 San Fernando Rd, in Glendale, Los Angeles.

Knox Presbyterian Church

There are many scenes that take place within a church: most of these scenes taking place in Rue’s daydreams and hallucinations.

The most memorable scene, arguably, has to be the one in which Labrinth performs ‘I’m Tired’ while Rue hugs him in front of all her family and friends, in the fourth episode of Season 2.

These scenes were filmed at the Knox Presbyterian Church, located at 5840 La Tijera Boulevard, Ladera Heights, Los Angeles.

Favorite Liquor

In the second season, Jules and Elliot (Dominic Fike) run into a liquor store to steal some alcohol while Rue waits in the car.

This leads to Rue and Jules’ falling out when Rue drinks some beer on the ride home, breaking her ‘sobriety’ in Jules’ eyes.

This scene was filmed at Favorite Liquor, a liquor store located at 533 S Victory Boulevard, Burbank, Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Union Station

In the series finale of the first season, Jules leaves Rue at the platform while she gets on a train, running away from home, leaving her new life at East Highland behind. This is one of the most memorable scenes of the series.

The scene itself was filmed at Los Angeles Union Station (LAUS), located at 800 N Alameda St, Los Angeles.

This is the main railway station in LA, and the biggest railway passenger terminal in the Western US.

Frank’s Restaurant And Coffee Shop

Between seasons 1 and 2, there were two special episodes that were aired separately: Rue’s episode, and Jules’ episode.

In Rue’s episode, Rue meets with Ali (Colman Domingo) and they spend the entire episode sat in a diner.

The diner which they filmed the episode inside was Frank’s Restaurant and Coffee Shop, which has since closed permanently. Frank’s Coffee Shop was located at 916 W Olive Avenue, San Bernardino.

El Matador State Beach

At the start of Jules’ special episode, there is a montage of Jules at a beach, in which Lorde’s ‘Liability’ plays in its entirety in the background.

This montage was filmed at El Matador State Beach. This beach is sited at 32215 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, Los Angeles.

Sony Pictures Studios

Lastly, many episodes of Euphoria were filmed at the Sony Pictures Studios, located at 10202 Washington Blvd, Culver City, Los Angeles.

Certain scenes had to be filmed at specially created sets, including several scenes that took place at McKay’s (Algee Smith) party in the pilot episode.

For example, the scene in which Rue got high at the aforementioned party, and the walls spin around her, were filmed in a rotation room on a set at Sony Pictures Studios.

Final Thoughts

Despite the fact that this show has only been around for a handful of years, and it is only on its second season, Euphoria has already left a lasting impact on its audience.

Each scene was masterfully filmed, using cinematography to create a realistic feel for each character, and each setting.

As well as being an excellent piece of television, Euphoria also features some of the best acting you are likely to see on TV today.

If you’re a fan of this series, and you ever find yourself visiting Southern California, you should definitely consider taking a tour of each of these iconic locations.
